Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics & Orthotics

Tuition fee: Local TZS 5,380,400  | International $ 4,380

 Offered At: KCMC University.
 School of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The BSc in Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O), offered under the School of Rehabilitation, is a four-year programme for both direct entrants and those with equivalent qualifications. Guided by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the course addresses the global call for inclusive health and rehabilitation.

The programme is designed in accordance with International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) standards with the curriculum equipping graduates with professional competence in clinical practice. Training covers patient assessment, prescription and design of components, fabrication, fitting, and follow-up of prosthetic and orthotic devices. Graduates are prepared to advance mobility, independence, and dignity by integrating professional reasoning, humanitarian values, and technical expertise contributing to more equitable and inclusive societies.

Learning Objectives of the BSc in Prosthetics & Orthotics

By the end of the Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics graduates will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of comprehensive knowledge of prosthetic and orthotic principles, including the anatomy and physiology relevant to limb loss and
deformities.
2. Conduct thorough assessments of patients to determine appropriate prosthetic and orthotic interventions based on individual needs.
3. Manufacture prosthetic and orthotic devices using appropriate materials and techniques, ensuring optimal functionality and comfort.
4. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address challenges in prosthetic and orthotic practice.
5. Exhibit professionalism, ethical behaviour, and cultural competence in interactions with patients and healthcare teams.
6. Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic care to patients with mobility disabilities.

7. Demonstrate an understanding of the latest technological advancements in prosthetics and orthotics, including CAD/CAM and 3D printing.
8. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals, providing education and support throughout the care process.
9. Engage in continuous professional development and reflective practice to enhance personal and professional growth.
10. Adhere to safety protocols and infection control measures in all aspects of prosthetic and orthotic practice.
