About the ICT Office
History and Evolution of ICT at KCMC University
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Office at KCMC University plays a pivotal role in managing the university’s digital infrastructure and delivering technology services that support education, research, and administrative operations. The importance of ICT in fostering innovation, knowledge generation, and technology transfer—key components of national development and “Education for Life”—has been embraced in the University’s strategic plan. Over the years, KCMC University has undergone several phases in the development and modernization of its ICT infrastructure, each aimed at improving service delivery, security, and accessibility.
Phase One: Initial Implementation
During the initial phase, ICT adoption at KCMC University was minimal. Only about 10% of students and staff owned personal computing devices, and university operations were largely manual, paper-based, or supported by basic computing applications like Microsoft Word and Excel.
Network connectivity was decentralized and limited, with speeds of only 2 Mbps, serving primarily staff. Security risks were relatively low in terms of data stored on hard copies, but the online network was highly vulnerable, being unsecured and unencrypted, with no protection for inbound or outbound traffic. Challenges included maintaining data integrity, producing consistent reports, and readiness for digital operations.
Phase Two: Technology Adoption and Expansion
Driven by advances in technology and growing user demand, the second phase focused on enhancing connectivity, security, and digital services. Advanced routers, manageable switches, and wireless access with MAC authentication were deployed. The university introduced a Learning Management System (LMS) for teaching, learning, and assessment, upgraded teaching laboratories with networked monitors, and equipped overflow classrooms for networked connectivity.
Additional services included video conferencing facilities, networked printers, and research repositories to support students and staff. These developments increased ICT engagement across the university, laying the foundation for more centralized management.
Phase Three: Security and Service Quality Enhancements
The third phase focused on improving security, performance, and service quality. Cisco Meraki MX100, a cloud-based network management system, was deployed to replace legacy devices such as routers, firewalls, and bandwidth managers. Meraki MX100 provides live monitoring of network performance, usage, and protection, including threat detection and prevention. It offers real-time insights into internal and external attacks, ensuring network facilities and organizational data remain secure.
The system also enables effective bandwidth management to maintain high-quality services, centralizes configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting, and provides comprehensive analytics on clients, applications, and network behaviour.
Phase Four: Infrastructure Modernization
Currently, the ICT Office has undertaken significant upgrades to the university’s network infrastructure. Key improvements include:
Restructured network topology from Ethernet to fiber-optic connectivity between switches and from switches to end-user devices using Cat 6e cabling.
Bandwidth upgrades from 30 Mbps to 200 Mbps and now to 400 Mbps.
Wireless network modernization, including the replacement of legacy W-LC controllers and access points with Wi-Fi 6 compatible equipment, capable of supporting up to 4 Gbps.
Network switches upgraded for faster, more reliable connectivity.
These advancements ensure a modern, secure, and high-performance digital environment that meets both national and international standards, supporting KCMC University’s mission to excel in teaching, research, and service.
